SORN Bikes, Projects & SORN Collections

For laid up motorcyles that are DVLA registered with a ‘logbook’. They must have been notified as off-the-road and secured in a locked building at home or another location, e.g. work or a family garage.

Track Day & Dirt Bikes (No V5 Required)

For bikes that are do NOT have a logbook, e.g. dirt bike theft insurance. They can be insured as long as you fit a Datatag security marking kit within 28-days (you can get a kit with 20% discount from us).

Our SORN Insurance is available for most types of motorcycles (mix up to 10 bikes per policy):

SORN motorbikes with a V5
Unregistered track or dirt bikes
Kids motorcycles and quads
Trikes and other project builds

There are three important security considerations (we may ask for more stringent security if your bike is worth a lot of money):

  1. Vehicle ID – If you have not registered your bike with the DVLA and it’s worth more than £4,000 you must fit a Datatag kit. This helps to identify the bike as belonging to you if stolen and recovered (we provide a 20% discount code to help).
  2. A locked building like a garage, outbuilding, bike safe, shipping container or shed – This does not have to be at your home address (you can keep your bike at other locations, including self storage facilities, or even inside your house on display).
  3. Good quality security devices – For most bikes this means either using a ground anchor, locking bikes together or locking your motorbike to an immovable object with proper motorbike chains (not bicycle locks).

SORN Motorcycle Insurance FAQs

To help explain SORN Motorcycle Insurance, here are a few common questions and answers about SORN and Laid Up Bike Insurance.

IS IT CHEAPER TO INSURE A SORN MOTORBIKE?

Yes, it’s usually cheaper to insure a SORN motorcycle than to buy ‘normal’ bike insurance, as you’re not actually riding on the road.

That’s because SORN Bike Insurance covers fire, theft and malicious damage (including damage caused by attempted theft), but not things like crash damage or injury to pillion passengers or pedestrians etc.

DOES SORN INSURANCE COVER ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE OR ROAD USE?

No. We have designed SORN Motorcycle Insurance for laid up or off-road bikes. For that reason the cover is focused on fire, theft and malicious damage (including damage from attempted theft).

You must not ride or park a SORN motorbike on the road, so there is no need to have accidental damage cover.

CAN I INSURE A LAID UP MOTORBIKE WITHOUT A V5 LOGBOOK?

Yes, SORN Motorcycle Insurance is designed to cover your laid up bikes for fire, theft and malicious damage (including damage caused by attempted theft) when they are secured in a locked building.

You can also add ‘In Transit’ cover for when you transport your motorbikes in a race van or trailer (box trailers and open bike trailers).

CAN I RIDE A SORN BIKE TO AN MOT?

No. Although you can add ‘In Transit’ cover to our SORN Insurance to continue protecting your bike when it’s being carried in a van or trailer (to tracks, shows, events or garage . Otherwise. if you want to ride on the road to an MOT yoappointments).

You will need standard road risk insurance to ride to an MOT appointment.
